Overview
Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa, offers several routes for those ready to embark on a thrilling adventure. These routes vary in difficulty, duration, scenery, and amenities. The primary routes are:
- Marangu Route: Known as the "Coca-Cola" route for its relative ease, it is the only route with hut accommodations (no camping). It is considered the most popular and shortest route, typically completed in 5-6 days. It offers a gradual ascent and is a great option for climbers seeking a balance of comfort and adventure.
- Machame Route: Often referred to as the "Whiskey" route, this is a more challenging path with beautiful scenery. It takes around 6ā7 days and includes camping.
- Lemosho Route: A longer route (7ā8 days) that starts on the western side, offering breathtaking views and a higher success rate due to the slower ascent.
- Rongai Route: Starting from the north, this route is less trafficked and takes around 6 days to complete, offering a more remote experience.
- Shira Route: This is a more difficult route that starts on the western side and also takes around 7ā8 days.
The Marangu Route is ideal for those seeking a more moderate challenge with easy access to huts and good amenities.

I had a good experience with the trip organised by sasatrip to summit the Uhuru peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Nice accommodation at Arusha, very helpful and friendly mountain guides and porters. I really miss the three course meals served during the trek, in particular, vegetable soup starters were my favourite. I won’t forget when my legs failed during the descent from summit, and the porters had to support me by my arms, while I knew that they themselves were exhausted.
